The Saint Bavarian Sage

Saint Bavarian Sage Cocktail is the brainchild of Marcel Wanek of the Holy Taste bar in Germany. Its purpose is to be a hangover remedy for the famous Oktoberfest. Of course, it can also be enjoyed on other occasions and not necessarily used to pick-me-up.

This is a gin-based cocktail with strong herbaceous and floral notes provided by the chosen tonic, Feever-Tree’s Mediterranean, detailed by thyme and lemon. Sage refreshes the palate and opens the stomach, thanks in part to the use of Edinburgh Dry Gin. It is low in alcohol, making it a great apéritif with gin.

Preparation of Saint Bavarian Sage Cocktail

What makes this cocktail special is the use of powdered sugar, which does not have to be vanilla. The gin it’s made with is Edinburgh Dry Gin, but obviously we can’t have every bottle available at home. Feel free to use whatever gin you have on hand if you can choose, perhaps opting for a dry one. So I have made two Saint Bavarian Sage Cocktail, one with Tanqueray London Dry Gin and the other with Hendrick’s Gin. I can assure you that they were very different, the first one being much milder, while the second one was really very bold in terms of flavours.

This is proof that the world of gin is truly endless, you could make the same cocktail with a different result every time. But of course, if you have the chance, try it with the original gin, so you can taste it as it was created.

You will need a shaker to make it; add all the ingredients except the tonic in the shaker. Shake well and strain into a tall glass with ice. Top with tonic water and garnish with a slice of lemon and a sprig of sage.

If you like cocktails with gin, then of course I recommend the Gin Tonic and also
