Homemade Almond Milk

Almond Milk is an alternative to cow’s milk, perfect for those who are intolerant or do not consume animal products. Its origins date back to the medieval monasteries, where the monks produced it for the times of Lent, where cow’s milk was not consumable for religious dictates. Even the Muslims made extensive use of it, also because at that time the present preservation methods did not allow a food such as milk to last, so it was immediately consumed fresh and the rest was used for the production of dairy products.

In Italy it’s a common product especially in the south in the regions of Sicily and Puglia. It is served cold or in the form of granita or served with Sicilian brioscia.

How To Make Almond Milk

But How To Make Almond Milk? Don’t worry because it’s really simple! Good peeled almonds and filtered (or bottled) water will suffice. Put the almonds in cold water for at least 12 hours and then proceed to blend them with the same water and finally filter everything by squeezing the pulp of the almonds well. For a tastier almond milk, just toast the almonds in the oven and then soak them.

Now you can decide whether to sweeten it immediately or at the time of consuming it. Store it in the fridge in an airtight bottle. Being homemade, it will last for 2-3 days, and you can use it to drink straight and to prepare cold or hot drinks.

Today I prepared the Homemade Almond Milk to make this smoothie with strawberries, but since I didn’t have time for lunch I decided not to filter it while keeping the pulp to make a nice substantial smoothie. You can choose other fruit besides strawberries, even those that hardly come close to cow’s milk. In addition to smoothies, you can drink it with coffee, prepare cocktails, ice cream or to prepare other desserts such as Korean Hottreok. And now let’s see How To Make Almond Milk.
