20 August is National Lemonade Day in America, so I decided to make a toast with a slightly tart Creamy Brazilian Limeade, the queen of all lemonades in my opinion. Prepared with just a few ingredients, whole limes, sugar, condensed milk and water, it is a drink that is somewhere between a lemonade and a dessert, and once you have tasted it, you cannot do without it.
What is Brazilian Lemonade
Brazilian Limeade is a refreshing drink and a true icon in Brazil. It is made with whole limes, including the peel, condensed milk, sugar, and water. Everything is blended, filtered and served with ice. The result is a cool, thirst-quenching and creamy drink. It’s perfect for hot, lazy summer days.
Origins of Brazilian Lemonade Recipe
The curious thing about this delicious drink is that although it is called lemonade, it is not made with lemons. In fact, it is only made with limes. The most likely explanation is that in Portuguese, limão is used for lime and limonade is the term for lemonade, which translates simply as lemonade. It’s also often called ‘limonada suíça’, which means Swiss lemonade. This is because Nestlé started importing condensed milk to Brazil in the 1940s. It became so popular throughout Brazil that it inspired many recipes, including the iconic condensed milk deserts, the Brigadeiros, small, delicious chocolates made with cocoa.
Some say this delicious Brazilian drink was invented by a street vendor in Minas Gerais. Others believe it was invented by the owner of a restaurant of Swiss origin.
Brazilian Limeade Recipe Preparation
The preparation of Brazilian lemonade is really simple! Firstly, wash some fresh limes well. Cut them in half lengthwise and cut away the fibrous middle part. Prepare the other ingredients and put the limes, sugar, a can of sweet condensed milk and a litre of water in the blender. Blend everything for about two minutes, four if using an immersion blender.
Strain and add another litre of water, stir well and serve with ice
Keep the lemonade in the fridge and stir well before serving.
Because it is so tasty, I have come up with some fancy ideas for using this homemade lemonade. Add another fruit, such as pineapple, strawberries, raspberries or other berries, after straining of course, to make it even more delicious. Or freeze the Brazilian Limeade and then reduce it to a slush, or use the ice cubes to make a delicious summer cocktail or to refresh and flavour a delicious fruit salad.
